Bible-In-The-Schools
Walk-A-Thon
Bibles in the Schools is made
possible to our school through private donations. We will be having a Walk-a-Thon in the Spring to raise
money for next year. Please help support this worthwhile program.
Reminders!
If your
child rides a bus in the afternoons, he is assigned to that
bus. The bus driver will not permit you to ride a different
bus without a note from a parent/guardian.
Early
Dismissals
According
to school policy, children should not be excused from school
early except for medical reasons. If your child is leaving early
a note should be sent to the child's teacher so she will not
have to stop teaching in order to get your child's assignments
together. Of course we realize occasionally emergencies arise.
Attention
Parents and All Other Visitors to
Our Facility
Because
Mercer County Policy mandates that all persons within our school
buildings show a visible means of identification. We must
request that when entering the facility for any reason that
you first report and sign in at the office for a Visitor's Pass. This
policy will be enforced and is for the protection of your children.
Car
Transportation
Parents
have been asked to drop-off children in the mornings, and/or
pick-up in the afternoons in the turn around area above the
school on Whitethorn Street. The only exceptions to this are
the identified special needs students who have limited mobility
and are permitted in the parking lot area. We ask that you please
abide by this policy as a safety precaution for all of our students.
Attendance
The
Mercer County Board of Education and Whitethorn School firmly
supports the concept that regular attendance in school correlates
with success in the classroom. It is therefore essential that
students attend school regularly and that they are on time for
classes.
While
absences seem to be in-check and kept to a minimum except in
the case of illnesses, the number of students who are arriving
late are at times excessive throughout the county.
And also,
just a reminder, three tardies count as an unexcused
absence. These tardies are used for computing absences in relationship
to semester exams and are regularly checked by the attendance
director.
The main entrance to the building is through the cafeteria. All other doors will be locked after 8:00 A.M. This
is for the safety of the children. All visitors must report to the office upon entering the building.

and special needs students. Ms. Taylor has also had the opportunity to supervise student teachers

proud to have her as a part of our school family. Congratulations Ms. Phillips!
National First
Grade Teachers Conference
Two teachers from our staff, Linda Richmond and
Jackie Williams, attended the "I Teach 1st" National First Grade Teachers Conference, in Nashville,
TN. They met two authors, Hans Wilhem and Maryann Cocca-Leffler. They also attended many other interesting
workshops and returned tot heir classrooms rejuvenated and ready to begin an exciting year.
READ-ALOUD
If you like to read to children, consider becoming a READ-ALOUD volunteer
at our school. Reading to children is one of the simplest gifts you can give that will impact the
rest of their life. You would come once a week to read to a classroom. If you are interested, call
the school office and we will direct you to Michelle Pettus, our READ-ALOUD coordinator.
S.H.A.P.E.
This is our after school program that runs from
September through May. It targets at risk students that can benefit from extra enrichment. It is
staffed by our own faculty and includes a physical education and nutrition component. Our program
is made possible through two federal grants. We continue to see amazing progress in the students
that participate.
Yearbook
A yearbook tells our story. Remember this year's classmates with our full
color 16-page capsule of the year's most newsworthy events for $12.00. We will be taking orders at
the first of the year. Watch for the flyers to come home.
