Whitethorn Primary School has been recognized by the
West Virginia Department of Education as a "Title I Distinguished
School" for continuous attainment of the State's high academic standards.
Title I is a federally funded program, which provides supplemental services to students at our school.
The purpose of the program is to ensure that all children have fair, equal, and significant opportunities
to obtain a high-quality education and reach proficiency on achievement standards. Education support is
provided in reading, language arts, and math. To deliver these services we have a full-time Title I Reading
teacher, a part-time math teacher, and an Academic Coach. Our academic coach provides modeling activities
in classrooms, team meetings, and parent training. We also recieve funding for instructional supplies and
equipment. We are very proud of being recognized as Title I Distinguished School. Here are some of the reasons
our program is a success.
In order to insure students are taught by highly qualified personnel, continous professional development
training sessions are scheduled to enhance the educational background of our staff.
A critical component of the Title I program is parent and community involvement. Together we
must share a common vision and purpose if our children are to achieve academic success. Therefore,
it is essential that we provide high quality parent involvement sessions. We try to plan them at differet
times of the day to include everyone. Most months they are in conjunction with our PTO meeting.
We also partner with Bluefield Intermediate School to help include more parents at one time.
Please watch for notices of these events coming this year.
County Wide Meetings: We offer two county meetings a year. They are held in November and December
at the Princeton Seminar Center.
Technology Training: Offered once a month for parents at BIS and Whitethorn.

about character building that also includes a special session just for parents! Please

How can I help? Parents are invited to take part in the planning of our school's Title I program.
Together we can build a better tomorrow. Contact the school to find out how you can help.
